NCERT Unveils Latest Social Science Textbook for Year 9
In a move set to broaden the horizons of young minds, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has unveiled its latest Social Science textbook for Year 9 students. Titled Understanding Society: India and Beyond, the book promises to be a cornerstone of contemporary educational materials, offering insights into the nuances of societal structures within and beyond Indian borders.
The newly released textbook is part of NCERT’s ongoing efforts to modernise and enrich the educational experience for students across the country. Dr. Anjali Verma, head of the NCERT textbook committee, remarked, “This new edition is designed not just to educate, but to inspire students to think critically about their place in the world.”
A Global Perspective
Unlike its predecessors, this textbook goes beyond the traditional scope of social science education. It introduces students to a diverse range of societal dynamics, encouraging them to consider global issues alongside local contexts. The aim is to foster a sense of global citizenship among students, equipping them with the analytical tools necessary to navigate an increasingly interconnected world.
Available from 29th September 2026, the book will be distributed through NCERT’s Publication Division outlets and authorised vendors. Educators and students alike are keenly awaiting its arrival, anticipating the fresh perspectives it promises to bring to the classroom.
Why This Matters
The introduction of Understanding Society: India and Beyond signals a shift in educational priorities, aligning with global educational standards that call for a more comprehensive understanding of the world. As India continues to assert its presence on the global stage, equipping the next generation with the knowledge and skills to engage in international discourse is more crucial than ever.
This textbook is more than just a collection of facts; it is a gateway to a broader understanding of the world, encouraging students to look beyond their immediate surroundings and consider the complexities of global society.
