New NMC Guidelines Prioritise Patient Safety in Cosmetic Surgery
In a move that could redefine the landscape of cosmetic surgeries in India, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has laid down comprehensive guidelines on aesthetic surgery and hair transplant procedures, focusing squarely on patient safety. Announced by the Union Minister of State for Health, Smt Anupriya Patel, these guidelines were presented in the Rajya Sabha, underscoring the government's commitment to safeguarding patients undergoing such procedures.
The guidelines emphasise the necessity for structured training of medical practitioners, ensuring they possess the requisite skills and knowledge. This initiative aims to mitigate the risks associated with aesthetic surgeries, which, by their very nature, are not without potential complications. The guidelines mandate that only qualified medical professionals undertake these procedures, highlighting the importance of proper patient selection and post-surgical care.
According to the NMC, any procedure involving skin incision for tissue removal or preparation, whether through traditional methods or robotics, is deemed surgical. This classification ensures that such procedures are only performed by those adequately trained in the complexities of surgical operations. The guidelines further stipulate that assistants involved in these procedures must also receive appropriate training in patient care and emergency response.

Dr. Anil Kumar, a seasoned cosmetic surgeon, remarked, "Structured training is crucial. It not only equips surgeons with the necessary technical skills but also prepares them for any unforeseen challenges during surgery."
