NIMHANS Leads the Way with Mental Health Awareness Walk in Bengaluru

The normally bustling streets of Bengaluru took on a different hue on 22 August, as NIMHANS spearheaded a mental health awareness walk. This initiative, while poignant in its simplicity, underscores a complex issue: India’s urgent need for mental health support. According to the 2016 National Mental Health Survey, approximately one in ten individuals in the country is grappling with a diagnosable mental health condition.

In a country where mental health often remains shrouded in silence, the walk aims to break the stigma and foster a more open dialogue about mental well-being. With over 150 million Indians needing mental health support, the scale of the challenge is immense. Yet, initiatives like this walk provide a beacon of hope.

NIMHANS, already a pivotal institution in India’s mental health landscape, is not new to innovative outreach. The organisation has been involved in projects like Naman, which brings mental health awareness and telehealth services to remote areas of Karnataka and Uttarakhand. This latest endeavour in Bengaluru is another step towards making mental health support more accessible and accepted across all strata of society.

Dr. Rajesh Kumar, a leading psychiatrist at NIMHANS, remarked, "Our aim is to create a society where mental health is openly discussed and those in need receive the care they deserve." His words echo the sentiments of many in the field who believe that awareness is the first step towards addressing the mental health crisis.

This awareness walk is timely, especially as global attention increasingly focuses on mental health. With educational institutions like UNSW Sydney setting up a campus in Bengaluru, the city is poised to become an educational and health hub. Initiatives such as this walk underscore the importance of holistic development—where mental well-being is as valued as academic and professional achievements.
