The research, conducted by scientists keen on understanding the environmental impact of our dietary choices, has discovered that organic eggs are responsible for twice the greenhouse gas emissions compared to those laid by caged chickens. The Free-Range Dilemma
Organic eggs are typically produced in free-range systems, allowing chickens to roam more freely than their caged counterparts. To put it in stark terms, if the entirety of the UK’s egg production were to switch to organic free-range, the carbon footprint would skyrocket to 2,316,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. This is more than double the 1,184,000 tonnes associated with battery farming.
