RIWATCH and Kohima College Join Forces for Cultural Research

Amidst the verdant hills of Northeast India, a significant collaboration has emerged that promises to weave together the threads of cultural preservation and academic research. The Research Institute of World’s Ancient Traditions, Cultures and Heritage (RIWATCH) and Kohima Science College have formalised their alliance through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with a shared vision to advance research in language documentation and cultural preservation.

This pact, celebrated at the Bahu Bhasa 2025 festival, underscores the importance of safeguarding the linguistic and cultural heritage of a region famed for its diversity. RIWATCH, located in Roing, Arunachal Pradesh, has long been revered as a repository of ancient traditions. Its executive director, Vijay Swami, has been instrumental in positioning the institute as a beacon for cultural dialogue on a global platform.

Kohima Science College, recognised nationally with a commendable rank amongst government autonomous colleges, adds significant academic prowess to this partnership. The Department of Anthropology at Kohima, having collaborated with international bodies such as the Firebird Foundation for Anthropological Research, brings invaluable expertise to the table.

A Meeting of Minds

The confluence of RIWATCH's cultural expertise and Kohima's academic rigour is expected to yield rich insights into the region's heritage. As multicultural societies increasingly grapple with questions of identity and heritage, this collaboration is timely. It serves not only as a model for regional development but also as a blueprint for similar initiatives across India and beyond.

In his remarks, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Khandu, praised the partnership, describing it as a 'treasure trove' of opportunities for both institutions. He highlighted the potential of such initiatives to bridge past traditions with contemporary academic discourse, fostering a greater understanding of cultural identity in an ever-evolving global context.

Looking Ahead

The MoU is more than a ceremonial agreement; it is a pledge to explore untapped cultural reservoirs and create a repository of knowledge for future generations. By documenting languages at risk of extinction and preserving indigenous practices, RIWATCH and Kohima Science College aim to enrich the cultural fabric of Northeast India.

This partnership not only promises academic enrichment but also reinforces the cultural pride of local communities. As these efforts unfold, they are likely to inspire similar collaborations, ensuring that the echoes of ancient traditions continue to resonate in modern times.
