SEBI Embraces AI for Predictive Supervision Amid Rapid Market Risks

In the rapidly shifting world of finance, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is turning to artificial intelligence and data analytics to stay ahead of the curve. Speaking at the Global Financial Forum 2026, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey articulated a vision where technology plays a central role in regulatory oversight.

Gone are the days when regulatory bodies could rely solely on traditional methods of supervision. As market risks evolve with increasing speed and complexity, the need for a more predictive approach has never been more pressing. Pandey emphasised that SEBI's objective is not merely to automate existing processes but to harness the potential of AI to discern patterns invisible to the naked eye.

“Our aim is to create a regulatory environment that is not just reactive but anticipatory,” Pandey stated. By employing advanced analytics, SEBI hopes to foresee potential market disruptions, enabling prompt interventions. This move aligns with the global trend towards adopting supervisory technology, or SupTech, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of financial market regulation.

SEBI's strategy involves the implementation of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) supervisory toolkit, designed to integrate AI into the regulatory framework. The intention is to build a robust system capable of monitoring, analysing, and predicting market behaviours in real-time.

However, this technological leap is not without its challenges. The conversation around ethical AI usage is heating up, with SEBI actively working on guidelines to ensure responsible AI deployment across the capital markets. The focus is on maintaining a balance between innovation and the safeguarding of market integrity.

As the Reserve Bank of India pilots tokenised market initiatives, SEBI's approach underscores a broader commitment to digital transformation within India’s financial sector. The integration of AI and analytics is poised to redefine how market risks are managed, promising a future where the regulator is not merely a spectator but a proactive guardian of the financial ecosystem.
