Star Health's Profit Surges by 25% Amid Efficient Growth

Star Health, a major player in India's health insurance landscape, has reported a striking 25% increase in its profit after tax for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2027. The company's profit now stands at ₹550 crore, a testament to its strategic efficiencies and robust growth trajectory.

The standout performer in the company's financial armoury was undoubtedly its underwriting profit, which saw a sixfold increase to ₹111 crore. This surge was bolstered by the company's decision to adopt the Ind AS accounting standards, a move that appears to have paid dividends.

Contributing significantly to this financial upswing was an 18.91% growth in gross written premium, amounting to ₹4,28,713 lakh. This growth underscores the health insurance sector's resilience and the increasing demand for health coverage in the country.

Strategic Efficiency and Market Position

Star Health's impressive growth is not solely attributed to market conditions but also to its strategic positioning. The company's combined operating ratio improved to 90.93%, indicating a meticulous balance between expenditure and income.

Additionally, the health segment remained a crucial growth driver, contributing ₹54,557 lakh to the net profit. This is reflective of the company's strong foothold in the health insurance domain, where it continues to settle claims efficiently — notably, 9.6 lakh claims with a 91% retail settlement rate.

As the company looks to the future, maintaining this momentum will be key. The health insurance industry in India is poised for further growth, and Star Health's strategic manoeuvres position it well to capitalise on emerging opportunities.

While challenges remain, particularly in maintaining low operating ratios amidst fluctuating healthcare costs, Star Health's latest results suggest a company not just surviving, but thriving in a competitive market.
