Supreme Court Clamps Down on Unauthorised Court Videos
In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has drawn a line in the sand against turning its hallowed halls into a source of perpetual entertainment for the masses. The court, often a theatre of intense drama, has prohibited the unauthorised posting, re-posting, and uploading of its proceedings on social media platforms without prior consent.
The decision, articulated with the weighty phrase that courts 'cannot be a 24x7 entertainment channel,' comes in response to growing concerns about the misuse and unauthorised editing of live-streamed court proceedings. While the Supreme Court has embraced technology by live-streaming its sessions to promote transparency, the misuse of these recordings has prompted a reevaluation of the practice.
Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, presiding over the bench, emphasised the importance of maintaining the decorum and dignity of court proceedings. 'We are not in the business of providing entertainment,' he noted, adding that the sanctity of the judicial process must be preserved above all else.
A Balance Between Transparency and Sanctity
While the ruling places restrictions on the dissemination of court recordings, it does not impede legitimate news coverage of judicial events. News outlets remain free to report on court cases without hindrance, provided they adhere to journalistic standards and ethics.
Social media platforms, however, have frequently been used to share edited snippets of court proceedings, sometimes out of context, leading to public misinterpretation and sensationalism. The court's decision aims to prevent such occurrences, ensuring that the legal process is not trivialised or distorted for entertainment purposes.
