Supreme Court Curtails Social Media Sharing of Court Proceedings
In an era where social media has become a primary source of information—and often misinformation—the Supreme Court of India has drawn a line in the digital sand. It has declared that its judicial proceedings are not to be treated as a round-the-clock entertainment channel. This decision comes amidst concerns about the potential misuse and monetisation of court session recordings.
The bench's decision is not without reason. Recent incidents have seen snippets of court proceedings taken out of context, leading to sensationalism and distortion. The court's ruling prohibits any extraction, modification, dissemination, or monetisation of live-streamed sessions without explicit permission. The aim is to protect the integrity of the judicial process and prevent it from being trivialised on platforms where the line between fact and fiction often blurs.
Preserving Judicial Dignity
While the Supreme Court’s directive is firm, it does not impede the fundamental freedom of the press. News organisations remain free to report on judicial matters, ensuring that the public stays informed about significant developments. However, the dissemination of raw footage or live streams without prior consent is strictly off-limits.
