WHO Unveils Free Course to Revitalise Global Health Systems

In a move set to bolster global health systems, the World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a free online course dedicated to primary health care (PHC). The initiative comes as a response to the persistent challenge of fragmented PHC implementation, despite nearly half a century of global commitment.

With a focus on placing communities at the centre of health systems, the course aims to arm health professionals, policymakers, and educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop resilient healthcare networks. These networks are pivotal as they serve as the initial point of contact for individuals engaging with the healthcare system.

A Global Imperative

Primary health care is often heralded as the backbone of effective health systems. It encompasses clinics, health centres, and community health teams that manage the bulk of common health issues. The WHO's new course is poised to address the uneven implementation of PHC by providing stakeholders with comprehensive educational resources.

Public health professionals, like those in Murang’a County and other regions, can benefit immensely from these resources. By fostering a deeper understanding of PHC, the course supports the co-creation of health systems that are inclusive and equitable.

Bridging the Gap

While the concept of primary health care is not new, its implementation has been inconsistent. This course represents a step towards bridging that gap. By offering a structured and accessible learning platform, WHO hopes to empower stakeholders worldwide to take actionable steps towards universal health coverage.

The course has already garnered attention from health leaders and agencies, such as the Ministry of Health’s Directorate of Primary Healthcare in Kenya. By equipping stakeholders with the right tools, the course aims to ensure that no community is left behind in the quest for robust health systems.
