Corporate India Falls Short on Environmental CSR in FY 2023-24
In a year marked by record corporate social responsibility (CSR) spending in India, a mere 8.4% of the funds were channelled towards environmental efforts. The Bharat CSR Performance Report 2026, which scrutinised the fiscal year 2023-24, paints a stark picture of the nation's corporate priorities. While overall CSR expenditure surged by 17%, reaching an unprecedented ₹40,794 crore, environmental causes evidently remain on the back burner.
The report reveals a notable trend: 97% of CSR funds were directly invested in social projects, a significant portion of which are aligned with government initiatives like Jal Jeevan and Skill India. This indicates a robust commitment to social welfare but simultaneously underscores a glaring neglect of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Why Environment Takes a Backseat
India's corporate giants appear to be prioritising immediate social benefits over long-term environmental gains. The focus on initiatives such as education, healthcare, and skill development reflects pressing social needs. Yet, this skewed distribution raises concerns about the future consequences of neglecting environmental issues, especially in a country vulnerable to climate change impacts.
Experts argue that corporates may perceive environmental projects as less immediate in their payoff compared to social schemes. Moreover, the complexity and duration of environmental projects, which often span years and require sustained investment, might deter companies from committing substantial resources.
The Path Forward
For a more balanced approach, the inclusion of environmental considerations in CSR policies is imperative. Policymakers and business leaders must collaborate to create incentives for investing in sustainable projects. Initiatives such as tax benefits or public recognition for companies championing environmental causes could tip the scales.
As the world grapples with the climate crisis, India's corporate sector must reassess its CSR strategies to ensure that environmental responsibility is not merely an afterthought but a core component of their mission. The road ahead demands a recalibration of priorities to safeguard not just the present, but the future as well.
