Environmental Pioneer Father Robert Athickal Passes Away at 73
Father Robert Athickal, a name synonymous with environmental activism in India, breathed his last on 19 July 2026 in Patna. The 73-year-old Jesuit priest, celebrated for founding the Tarumitra movement, succumbed to cardiac-related problems after a brief hospitalisation at Holy Family Hospital.
In 1986, amidst the growing environmental crises, Father Athickal sowed the seeds of what would become a formidable force for biodiversity preservation. Tarumitra, which translates to 'Friend of Trees', began as a grassroots initiative in Bihar, expanding its branches to over 1,600 schools and amassing a membership of 300,000 young environmentalists across 23 states in India. The organisation, under Athickal's guidance, even garnered consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
His vision was not merely confined to planting trees. Father Athickal emphasised practical actions such as installing solar panels and promoting sustainable living. His dedication to educating and involving young minds in environmental issues set a precedent for eco-conscious movements in the region.
Father Athickal's influence extended beyond the borders of India. He was a vocal advocate on international platforms, urging global leaders to take substantive steps in addressing climate change. His receipt of an honorary degree for his contributions underscores the global recognition of his work.
As the news of his passing reverberates, tributes pour in from around the world. Colleagues, students, and environmentalists alike remember him as a gentle yet resolute force, whose life's work has left an indelible mark on the planet's future. In the words of one of his students, 'Father Athickal taught us not just to plant trees, but to nurture them, and in doing so, nurture ourselves.'
