Green Light for Puri's New Airport Amid Environmental Concerns

The lush coastal district of Puri is set to undergo a transformative change with the green signal given for the Shree Jagannath International Airport. This project, valued at ₹5,631 crore, has cleared a significant hurdle by securing both environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearances. Yet, as shovels prepare to break ground, the spectre of environmental concerns looms large.

Balancing Growth and Conservation

The planned airport, located about 5 kilometres from the revered Jagannath Temple, promises to handle up to 4.6 million passengers annually in its first phase. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) leads the endeavour, which is expected to catalyse tourism and economic growth in the region. However, the project's green credentials are under scrutiny due to the anticipated loss of trees and the need to realign adjoining roads.

Puri Collector Dibyajyoti Parida confirmed the clearance, noting that certain formalities, such as obtaining the final no-objection certificate from the Ministry, remain. Meanwhile, the district administration has begun land acquisition processes, offering compensation to 129 families who will be relocated.

Environmental Impacts and Community Concerns

While the airport is heralded as a boon for local development, environmentalists are cautious. The clearing of significant tree cover and potential disruption to local ecosystems are pressing issues. Critics argue that such projects need a holistic assessment of environmental costs versus economic benefits.

Nonetheless, the airport is expected to enhance connectivity, making Puri more accessible to both domestic and international tourists. This is seen as a strategic move to position Puri as a global pilgrimage and tourist destination, bringing in a wave of economic activity.

As the ambitious project moves forward, the balancing act between fostering development and preserving the environment will need careful navigation. The hope is that sustainable practices can be woven into the fabric of this new infrastructure to mitigate its environmental footprint.
