India Calls for Robust Health Systems at UN Meeting

As the echoes of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to reverberate, India has taken a decisive stance at the United Nations, urging for a global commitment to resilient health systems. Speaking at the second UN High-Level Meeting on pandemic prevention and preparedness, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava highlighted the necessity of learning from past experiences to enhance future defences.

"Pandemic preparedness must not be a mere afterthought but an integral part of our national health strategies," she remarked. Her words resonated with the meeting's themes of equity and solidarity, as she emphasised that national readiness should be bolstered by international cooperation, not supplanted by it.

The meeting, held on 25 September, served as a pivotal platform for member states to discuss the lessons gleaned from the pandemic and the path forward. Srivastava's address underscored the importance of translating these lessons into sustained investments, institutional capacity building, and the development of resilient health systems that can withstand future crises.

Equity and Global Cooperation

Central to India's message was the call for fair Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing under the World Health Organisation's Pandemic Agreement. This principle, she argued, is crucial to ensuring that all nations, regardless of economic prowess, can access life-saving resources during health emergencies.

The emphasis on equity reflects a broader call for global solidarity. The pandemic, which laid bare the vulnerabilities of even the most advanced health systems, highlighted the need for a unified approach. "No nation should be left behind in our collective fight against pandemics," Srivastava asserted.

Domestic Investment and International Support

The Health Secretary also stressed that while international assistance is welcome, it should be seen as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, domestic efforts. She urged nations to integrate pandemic preparedness into their regular health planning and financing mechanisms, ensuring that national systems are well-equipped to handle future challenges.

India's position at the UN meeting reflects a strategic push towards not just reactive measures, but proactive planning. By advocating for resilient health infrastructures, India aims to foster a global environment where pandemics are anticipated, prepared for, and mitigated through concerted efforts and shared resources.
