Odisha's Bold Science Roadmap: Rare Earths to Space Exploration
In a move poised to redefine Odisha's scientific landscape, the state has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap that places rare earths, marine biotechnology, and space exploration at its core. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr Jitendra Singh, marks a collaborative effort between the Centre and the state government, aiming to leverage Odisha's unique geographical and mineral advantages.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Union Budget 2026-27, which earmarked specific corridors for rare earth elements in Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. These corridors are pivotal, given the burgeoning global demand for rare earths, indispensable for modern technology from smartphones to electric vehicles. Odisha, rich in these minerals, is set to become a linchpin in India's rare earth strategy.
Marine Biotechnology: A New Frontier
Marine biotechnology is another cornerstone of the roadmap. Science and Technology Minister Krushna Chandra Patra highlighted Odisha's vast potential in this sector, underscoring the state's commitment to harnessing its extensive coastline. The Odisha Marine Biotechnology Research and Innovation Centre (OMBRIC) is envisioned as a catalyst for growth, aiming to position the state as a leader in marine-based scientific research.
Reaching for the Stars: Space Research
Space exploration, too, takes centre stage in this roadmap. Odisha's collaboration with ISRO is set to deepen, focusing on advanced space research and technology development. This strategic alignment is expected to bolster India's broader space ambitions while providing a boost to local scientific talent and infrastructure.
The roadmap also includes the expansion of the Institute of Life Sciences by 50 acres, signifying a significant investment in research facilities and academic growth. This multifaceted approach not only aims to propel Odisha onto the global scientific stage but also to ensure sustainable economic growth through science-led innovation.
