Vizag's AI Data Centres: Environmental Concerns Stir Debate
Visakhapatnam, often touted as the future hub of India's AI and cloud computing sector, has recently found itself at the centre of an environmental debate. The Indian government has stated that AI data centres will only need environmental clearance if their physical footprint surpasses thresholds set by the Environmental Impact Assessment Notification of 2006. This clarification comes as investments worth $10 billion to $15 billion are projected in the Vizag AI hub over the next few years.
Environmentalists and local groups, however, are sounding the alarm. Their concerns are not unfounded. The geographical positioning of certain data centres, like the Tarluvada facility, raises eyebrows due to its proximity to the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary acts as a critical lung space for the city, and the data centre's location, a mere 450 metres from the eco-sensitive zone, has been a point of contention.
Water and Energy: The Silent Consumers
At the heart of the controversy is the immense water and energy consumption these data centres entail. AI servers generate significant heat, necessitating large cooling systems that guzzle water. In a region where water scarcity is a persistent issue, the environmental sustainability of such facilities is under scrutiny. Furthermore, the energy demands of these centres, powered in part by coal-based electricity, add to the environmental burden.
While the Centre's clarification delineates which data centres require clearance, it does not address the broader environmental implications of their operations. Critics argue that the current assessment model, based on construction footprint, does not adequately reflect the unique environmental challenges posed by the data industry.

As India races to establish itself as a leader in AI and cloud computing, balancing economic ambitions with environmental stewardship becomes crucial. The burgeoning data centre industry in Vizag could serve as a litmus test for how the country manages this delicate balance.
